Flood relief activity by NWO in various districts across Sindh
Pakistan has received unprecedented monsoon rain and floods across the country. Sindh province has been affected the most. This is nothing less than a humanitarian disaster considering its magnitude and impact upon the lives of millions of affected people. People have lost their homes, belongings and the livelihood resultantly forcing them to live without shelter, food and all the essential necessities of life. Millions are affected according to conservative estimates. Much needs to be done in order to avoid any colossal humanitarian disaster.
As the ground realities witnessed that, monsoons rains and floods from June to August 2022 in Pakistan has affected over 33 million people so far. More than 110 districts have been declared 'calamity hit,' with extreme flooding including provinces of Balochistan and Sindh. As per NDMA report there have been 1,033 deaths and 949,858 people have been affected. Sindh Province reported the highest number of deaths as 306 people lost their lives. Around 300,000 households’ families across Sindh has been displaced/migrated due to floods caused by heavy rainfall and breaches occurred in Protection Bunds and Drains that has severally affected the cities. A very limited number of displaced families are in relief camps, however more that 75% affected people are on the roads, bank of canals or raised platform. There is traumatic situation of these families as there is no available of safe drinking water, food, medical facility to these affected families.
The Nishat Welfare Organization (NWO) – a humanitarian organization, registered with the Government of Sindh – has mobilized hundreds of professional, experienced and dedicated volunteers in Sindh and Balochistan after the recent floods pummelled up and down the country.
Both these province have been the most-affected by this extreme flooding of biblical proportion, with the Sindh being the worst-hit province, where millions of poor souls are marooned. According to the official estimates, 300,000 families had been displaced in Sindh.
There is a traumatic situation for these displaced families as they could hardly avail safe drinking water, food, medical facility etc.
The situation is even turning worst due to continuous monsoon rains, approximately 12,000 families living along the road side are under the threat of flood and heavy rainfall, and these people don’t have access to food, clean drinking water, shelter and medicines. Many people have lost their slums due to continuous rainfall. Water level is rising and almost half of the slums of the riverside victims have been filled with flood water. It is very risky for these people to stay in their slums. Many small children are suffering from skin infections like boils and rashes due to flood water. Many people are suffering from fever and there is great chance of epidemic spread of typhoid, viral fever, acute diarrhoea, gastro-enteritis, cholera, dysentery and bronchitis due to living in unhygienic conditions and due to use of flood water.
On one hand people are exposed by the rain flood and at the same time they are very much worried because they feel that if they leave the flood area villages, their slums will be destroyed forever and it would be very difficult for them to rebuild these slums.
Keeping in consideration the dire need of people, NWO has planned to provide 2500 ration bags and organize 10 medical camps in mostly affected district including Dadu and Badin. To execute plan of ration distribution for 6500 families and organize 10 medical camps, the cost require is PKR. 17,000,000 (Pakistan Rupees Seventeen million only), below is the break of cost estimation.
The province of Sindh is one of the poorest regions of Pakistan with regard to the their income and personal resources. The under-privileged and deeply improvised class has been affected the most.
