Background and Objectives
The main source of drinking water for villages as well as urban water supply schemes is canals and water courses. Owing to the shortage of freshwater downstream from Kotri Barrage, a major problem being faced, especially by coastal communities is the depleted supply of drinking water. Most of the coastal communities usually purchase water jerry cans at heavy prices and this makes them more vulnerable economically. The water purchased and consumed is very unhygienic and causes many water-borne diseases. According to the 1998 Population Census, overall, 13 percent of households used piped water (nul), 15.73 percent used hand-pumped water and 6.17 percent had wells as indoor sources of Drinking water.
Nishat Welfare Organization has been working on community development projects in Badin district for many years. As part of our mission, our team regularly visits vulnerable communities in the area to identify the issues that they face. NWO team gathered data in some of the villages they go now frequently and identified some 8 locations of acute shortage of drinking water facility. There is neither local government support nor resources nor collective social effort. Considering the grave water situation, NWO team created a programme with the prime objective of providing safe drinking water to vulnerable communities living in Union Councils Luari Sharif and Kadhan in coastal belt.
